• Away with the Fade

Did you know that friction is the leading cause of sunless tan fade? If anything rubs against your skin, cells rub off. Clothing, seat belts, even your towel when you get out of the shower cause friction and ultimately, rub off. Think about it…. We are constantly losing skin cells. Like, 30,000 to 40,000 in a minute. Seriously. That averages out to 9 pounds of skin cells a year. Are you grossed out yet? This is why proper skincare is so important. When you have a spray tan, only the top layers of skin are actually tanned. We want to keep those skin cells as long as possible. Obviously, those are all going to naturally fall off in the next 7 to 21 days but there are several simple steps to take to ensure you get the most out of their tan.

    1. Drink plenty of water- The skin is the last organ of the body to benefit from drinking water, so fill up that cup one more time!
    2. Exfoliate– use the simple Sjolie Sugar Scrub to gently and effectively exfoliate off excessively dry skin cells anywhere from 5 to 24 hours prior to your spray tan.
    3. Pat Dry- when getting out of the shower rather than rub with your towel, simply pat the skin dry.
    4. Moisturize– friction and daily evaporation of the skin cause rub off. To keep it at a minimum we recommend using the Sjolie Tan Extend moisturizer to keep the skin tan, even and moisturized.

In most cases, blotchy or uneven fading of a spray tan is typically because you are not following steps one through four above, and with a little bit of effort, you’ll never run into the issue of uneven fading or blotchy patches in your spray tan.  Have any other Pro tips for keeping your tan on longer?  please post in the comments section below.

  • Cold Weather Spray Tan Tips!

This cold weather is starting to take its toll on my skin.  Most of us are losing our UV base tans from being outside this summer. Which means we need to use a lower DHA solution. This is when I pull out the Sjolie original solution 6 and Sjolie original Solution 9 and custom formulate. The sun and I don’t get along, so I am usually on the fair side year round and always use a combination of the 2. However, the combination of cold and my lack of consistent moisturizing has led to drier skin. This is the time of year when using an aloe based spray tanning solution like the Sjolie Original Solution line is vital. Even with great moisturizing we can be dry, but the aloe actually counteracts any of the typical drying effects of alcohol based solutions.  And, as an added bonus it goes above and beyond giving you a built in moisture lock and perfectly lasting color.

Sunless Fact: Dry Skin + Alcohol based = Bad fade and Orange tendencies

Self-tanning lotions, mousse, gels and oils typically have a high alcohol content which can lead to excess dryness, bad fade as well as the dreaded orange. Often during the winter months, clients will resort to using only self-tanners. Don’t get me wrong, self-tanners like the Sjolie Tan Extend give amazing color and great moisture(which many other products are lacking, can you say alligator skin?).  It mainly comes down to streakiness and tan limbs… only. Who wants to look in the mirror and see a white torso and tan arms and legs? I always hear, “No one will see the rest of me, so why not?” My reply is always, “You don’t tan for them, you tan for you!”

So, as we enter this holiday season full of party dresses, family, friends and celebrations educate your clients on how to achieve that perfect winter glow no matter what you are showing and that true beauty comes from within. A spray tan just adds that extra glow!

Best Wishes and the Happiest of Tanning!
