  • Why does spray tanning turn you orange?

Why does spray tanning turn you orange?

The dreaded “orange” effect has stuck with the sunless tanning industry since its conception. As technology and products become more advanced, this issue began to decrease, however everyone remembers this unwanted color.

So why does spray tanning turn you orange? Typically, you will find this is caused because of user error. As a technician, there are some key aspects that must be taken into consideration to ensure an orange free tan.

Using the right solution: You, as the technician, must fully understand the different skin tones and which solution works well with each. Everyone’s skin tone is different so a solution that works well on one person may not work well on another.

It is recommended to choose a solution close to the client’s natural skin tone. A more natural looking tan will help to avoid a heavy contrast between spray tan and natural tone. Spraying a client with too dark of a solution can cause an orange hint to the skin because the contrast is so extreme. Other effects of a dark solution could include patchiness, alligator skin and uneven fading. Besides, it’s better to have the client be too light than too dark!

Staying educated: Keep up to date with your sunless brand. You can’t be a great technician without the proper education. Be sure you are following your formula’s application instructions and application tips.

Most companies will only recommend 1-2 coats of solution per client. Why do they do this? Over applying is a thing! It is extremely common for a technician to apply one coat of solution to the body and another AND another thinking the one coat was not enough color. Big no no. Initial application color is ONLY BRONZER and plays no part in how the color will develop. Too much solution can be detrimental to a spray tan, and can lead to the terrible orange.

Proper application: Application will also play a key role in avoiding an orange looking spray tan. More specifically in those problem areas such as knees, elbows, hands, feet, ankles and so on.

Technicians should avoid heavy application on drier areas that are prone to product buildup. It’s recommended to feather off in areas like ankles and wrists. As extra precaution, it is always essential to apply the proper prep product to your client such as pH balancing spray and barrier cream. Barrier cream should be applied to all dry areas so DHA penetration on the skin is minimal. pH balancing spray should be applied to the entire body to ensure a cleansed surface for solution application.

Using reputable product: Make sure your clients are using reputable at home products. Many at home tanning products can be purchased at any drug store. Many of these self-tanners have an unknown amount of DHA which can lead to over development. Provide your clients with alternatives that will be more beneficial and rather than detrimental. It’s also a good idea to emphasizes the importance of proper usage to your self-tanner clients, all the tips above go for self-applied tanning products as well!

  • Can I shave with a spray tan?

Can I shave with a spray tan?

With our days heating up and more skin showing, it is important to remember how shaving can affect our skin and our spray tans.

Mechanical Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells using any form of tool (razors, sponges, scrubs, brushes etc.). When shaving with a razor not only do we remove the exposed hair, we are also removing that fine layer of dead skin which our sunless color is applied to. In turn you are not just removing hair you are removing your tan!

Explaining the importance of how shaving can affect our sunless tan is essential when educating your sunless clients. Limiting the amount of shaving after the sunless solution is applied should always be encouraged. It is in the clients best interest to shave(or any kind of hair removal) at least 24 hours in advance to receiving a sunless tan. Hair removal too close to the sunless appointment could cause product buildup in open pores which will give the look of “dotted skin” and possibly patchiness.

As technicians and sunless tanners ourselves, we understand shaving is occasionally inevitable, here are some shaving tips to share with your clients when shaving with a sunless tan is a must:

    • Shave using a new or sharpened blade.
    • Wait 24-48 hours after your sunless session before shaving.
    • Do not apply heavy pressure when shaving.
    • Avoid harsh shaving products, using a conditioner when shaving is recommended.

  • Being Unfiltered with Spray Tanning Brands

Today we are going to be unfiltered with spray tanning product rules and break down what you need to consider when choosing which sunless products and brands to stock in your salon. There are many important guidelines you will want to consider when not only selecting a good performing spray tan brand, but also one that won’t hold you legally liable if there are any issues down the road.

What should be on the spray tanning product label?

The first part of this blog to go over the fact that many consumers and businesses do no realize that some products they carry are simply breaking the law with proper display of important FDA and other government regulations when it comes to labeling.   Here is what needs to be on the product label to be “legally sound” while being displayed in your stores:

    • Place of manufacture (Should show  manufacturer and/or location the product was made)
    • Ingredients List – This is a big one, many sunless products leave off or only list partial ingredients. This is a big NO NO, and is required by law for all cosmetic products to properly display the ingredient list of the product. Customers have a right to know what is being sprayed, and/or applied to their skin. This is important not just for spray tan solution, but also retail products like tan extender, body wash, and so forth. If your spray tanning brands you carry do not display ingredient lists, run for the hills as you could be liable yourself if your customer decides to investigate your business for selling products that are not properly displaying ingredients.
    • Well written instructions –  This one is not required by the FDA, however will give you less liability if your client cannot dispute how to properly use and apply the product they purchased from you.

What ingredients should you worry the most about when spray tanning?

Do you ever worry about what you and your customers are breathing in every time you are spraying tanning? Well, you should. Spray tanning is 100% safe as long as you are using brands that care about your well being. Here at SJOLIE, for example we refuse to use some “industry” standard ingredients simply because they are not tested and/or not FDA approved.

The following ingredients should be on everyone’s naughty list, for your own safety and your clients:

    • Erythrulose is the most dangerous ingredient and is not FDA Approved for topical use on humans.

Erythrulose is used in many sunless tanning blends to increase tan duration and counter the ghastly orange tinge that earlier formulas produced. Health Wyze mentions an Australian public health report from 2008 that found erythrulose genotoxic, meaning it alters your genetic cellular structure. Erythrulose is used in some major brands that are, if not that most recognizable brands in the industry (Besides Sjolie that is, again,we refuse to use harmful ingredients).

    • Parabens (Preservatives) is the second most dangerous ingredient in sunless tanners.

Parabens, a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in cosmetics, have been shown to mimic the action of the hormone estrogen. Studies have shown parabens to be linked to Breast Cancer, Estrogenic Action, infertility in Males, pre-mature skin ageing, and environmental toxins. Other manufacturers will use parabens in the sunless industry to extend the life of their tanning products. We are 100% proud to the fact that our solution will last only 6 to 8 months on the shelf only because we do not use preservatives, aka parabens in our solution or product line.

    • Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Red 40 (CI 16035), Blue 1 (CI 42090) coloring agents.

These toxins and chemicals increase your risk of skin sensitivity and irritation, and are known for blocking pores and increasing the risk of acne breakouts. If they’re included in products you leave on your skin, such as moisturizers and masks, they may be absorbed into your body where they can cause additional damage.

Is it safe to spray tan?

God yes, Spray tanning is a very safe and reputable service to be offering your client base without concern to you or your customers. With that being said, like with any industry, there are some products that might render you “not” safe. Just make sure not to offer any products that have Erythrulose or Parabens in their ingredient list. You will want to be unfiltered and blunt when talking to your suppliers, make sure they are properly displaying the facts required by law.

Should I be worried about liability with spray tanning a pregnant woman?

First off, you should never make that choice for the customer or hide anything from your customer that would alter their decision just so you can make a quick dollar. We tell every customer that asks “Can I spray tan a pregnant customer?” that they need to tell the customer to consult with their doctor prior to receiving a spray tan, and to get a written approval from the doctor. With that being said, we have not had one single report over the years that any doctor has declined a spray tan while using/showing the SJOLIE ingredient list for our spray tanning solution.

What should I do if my favorite brands do not list ingredients on their cosmetic labels?

We know the sunless industry as a whole, carries 2 to 3 different spray tanning brands on average (for those offering spray tanning services).  If one of your “favorites” isn’t properly displaying their ingredients on their retail or solution bottles, simply ask for a printable sheet to have on hand immediate in case one of your walk in customer decides to ask for it.  You do NOT want to be stuck unable to provide an ingredient list to your client base, as that could create legal issues for you.

If your favorite brand refuses or does not acknowledge your request, we recommend jumping ship asap. This could mean multiple different things, but most likely is the fact that they use ingredients that are frowned upon (aka parabens and erythrulose) and are embarrassed to admit it. We see many competitors state publicly “This is proprietary information that we cannot divulge”…….  FALSE,  it is against the law not to state your ingredient list on a cosmetic product line.  Do not believe that line for one second.

Remember – Spray tanning is safe, amazing, and profitable when done right….

Never forget that as long as you choose your sunless brands carefully, you are safe, your customers are safe, and you are in an booming beauty industry set to profitable for many years to come. My take away for you, is do your research, demand proper labeling to protect your business from any liability. SJOLIE will always post, and proudly display all ingredients we choose, as we have nothing to hide with our amazing all natural ingredients. • Away with the Fade

Did you know that friction is the leading cause of sunless tan fade? If anything rubs against your skin, cells rub off. Clothing, seat belts, even your towel when you get out of the shower cause friction and ultimately, rub off. Think about it…. We are constantly losing skin cells. Like, 30,000 to 40,000 in a minute. Seriously. That averages out to 9 pounds of skin cells a year. Are you grossed out yet? This is why proper skincare is so important. When you have a spray tan, only the top layers of skin are actually tanned. We want to keep those skin cells as long as possible. Obviously, those are all going to naturally fall off in the next 7 to 21 days but there are several simple steps to take to ensure you get the most out of their tan.

    1. Drink plenty of water- The skin is the last organ of the body to benefit from drinking water, so fill up that cup one more time!
    2. Exfoliate– use the simple Sjolie Sugar Scrub to gently and effectively exfoliate off excessively dry skin cells anywhere from 5 to 24 hours prior to your spray tan.
    3. Pat Dry- when getting out of the shower rather than rub with your towel, simply pat the skin dry.
    4. Moisturize– friction and daily evaporation of the skin cause rub off. To keep it at a minimum we recommend using the Sjolie Tan Extend moisturizer to keep the skin tan, even and moisturized.

In most cases, blotchy or uneven fading of a spray tan is typically because you are not following steps one through four above, and with a little bit of effort, you’ll never run into the issue of uneven fading or blotchy patches in your spray tan.  Have any other Pro tips for keeping your tan on longer?  please post in the comments section below.

  • The Differences Between the Sjolie Solution Line: A Guide on When to Use Which Solution

Not every person is exactly the same, so why should every sunless tanning solution be the same?  When servicing your clients, it’s important to know why certain products are better for them than others.  This will ensure that you provide them with not only outstanding service, but a spray tan that best fits their needs and looks natural, even and flawless.

The Sjolie line consists of four Aloe based solutions and three alcohol based solutions.  One of the alcohol based solutions is the Ultra One Rapid Tan.  This solution is in a class of its own, and it will be discussed in further detail later in this blog.  So, the big question remains: what are the differences between the aloe based solutions and alcohol based solutions?

    Drying Time

The Aloe based solutions (6, 9, 12, Dark Depth) are going to be more moisturizing on the skin, therefore will take longer to dry after applied

Aloe solutions will feel tackier for a longer period while developing (this means it’s working!)

The alcohol based solutions (Icon Reserve and Ultra) which will dry faster than Aloe and won’t feel as ‘tacky’ or wet as they develop

    Development Time

The Tier 1 and Tier 2 solutions have a 6-8 hour development

The Aloe solutions have 6-8 hour development

The Ultra has a 4 hour development

Tan Longevity (assuming proper pre and post tan care)

The Aloe based solutions are going to last a bit longer; about 7-10 days

The alcohol lasts closer to 5-7 days (including Ultra)

When deciding which type of solution will work best on your client’s skin and give them the best results, consider the following:

    1. Do they tend to have dry skin?
    2. Do they moisturize regularly?
    3. Do they live in a geographical area that is humid?
    4. Is the climate for which they live dry?
    5. Are they going on vacation and want the tan to last a long time?
    6. Are they going straight to work after their session where they have to wear undergarments and fitted clothing?

If you answered YES to A, D, E then perhaps the Aloe based solutions are a better fit.  If the answer was YES to B, C, F then your client might prefer the alcohol based solutions.  Of course, keep in mind your client’s preferences when deciding which solution to use.  This is simply a guide to help you as the technician make recommendations.

One of the most versatile solutions you can incorporate into your services is the Ultra One Rapid Tan.  This solution is an option for those who do not have the time to let a tan develop for the full 6-8 hours before rinsing.  While this tan has the same properties as the other alcohol based solutions, it may be rinsed after a maximum of 4 hours and the color will continue to develop over the course of 24 hours.

Keep all of these factors in mind when preparing to spray your clients.  This will set you apart from other technicians who aren’t as educated on the solution lines they use.  Again, knowing the differences and benefits to each product will allow you to make the best decision for your clients and set them up for a flawless tan every time.
